Redefining workspace design with Ecosurety

Ecosurety, a sustainable packaging compliance company, wanted to create a new office that represents their innovative mission and unique culture. A fellow B Corp company, Interaction proved to be a perfect partner, sharing the Ecosurety passion for creating spaces that benefit both people and planet.

Located on the second floor of 4 Colston Avenue, the project is part of a larger initiative to refurbish the whole building, with an aim to improve sustainability, performance and biodiversity in Bristol’s city centre.

The result is 7,000 sq ft of stunning workspace that seamlessly integrates the natural world into the heart of the city, reflecting Ecosurety’s ethos to champion environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing.

The team is thrilled about the new office, which is a physical demonstration of our ethos. We highly value our employees’ wellbeing and wanted to offer them a great place to work, whilst meeting high sustainability standards aligned with our purpose.

Unique biomes

A connection with nature

Ecosurety’s new office design is built around the concept of creating eco zones that encourage movement, collaboration and a connection to the natural world. Split across two wings, the workspace was reimagined to prevent siloed working. We introduced three unique areas, nicknamed ‘biomes’, each tailored to support different work styles and moods.

The Rainforest biome is a lush, multisensory space brimming with greenery and biophilia, creating the perfect setting for socialising and collaborative work. In contrast, the Marine biome offers a calming atmosphere with cool blue tones and sandy timbers, making it an ideal environment for productive team tasks. For quieter, focused work away from the buzz, the Savannah biome provides a still and serene space, with warm tones that encourage focus work.

The biomes not only align with Ecosurety’s mission to connect data, policy and the environment, but also reflects a commitment to inclusivity and flexible working. Employees are encouraged to move around the office depending on their daily tasks, mood or work styles – no matter how you best work, Ecosurety’s workspace will provide an area for you to be productive and comfortable.

A spacious kitchen area provides the perfect opportunity for employees to take a break and catch up.

Every detail considered

Sustainability at the heart

Sustainability and the circular economy were at the heart of this project. Every piece of furniture and finish was chosen for its sustainability credentials, helping the office achieve a prestigious SKA Gold rating – the highest level possible.

Reusing materials was key. We repurposed 99% of the furniture from Ecosurety’s old office, opting to reupholster and refresh items to give them new life. Circular economy principles guided every design decision, including the end-of-life impact of every product used. Tube lighting made from compostable hemp and a sofa constructed from leftover wine corks further demonstrate this commitment.

The biomes are echoed in the materiality choices – fabric made from recycled fishing nets features in the Marine area, and acoustic panelling made from natural cork is in the Savannah zone.

Resourcefulness extended to the smallest details. Offcuts from terrazzo kitchen counters were cleverly reused as room panels. Toilet signs were designed with cut-out wood, using both the cut-out and what was left behind as functional signage. QR codes placed throughout the office explain these thoughtful sustainability touches, allowing employees to learn more about the eco-friendly choices behind their workspace.

Ecosurety recently underwent a rebrand, celebrating their unique purpose of connecting nature and data. To reflect this, we commissioned local Bristol artist Rose Vickers to create a bespoke statement piece. Vickers created the statement piece using recycled school rules – a symbol of data and numbers coming together with creativity and sustainability.

A smart app integrates seamlessly with the space, offering control over heating, lighting and room bookings.
Climbing plants, pops of bright colour and different furniture types add variety in the rainforest biome.
